Phlebotomy students get practice ahead of exam
Volunteers are rolling up their sleeves to help spark the careers of Tri-State teenagers. Woodward Career Technical High School is playing host to the sixth annual "Sticks for Kicks" this week. The event helps high schoolers practice their phlebotomy skills. The 15 students must complete 30 successful blood draws before taking the certified national phlebotomy exam in April. One student says it is the ideal next step for her after high school. "I got into this program because it gives me a better opportunity when I get out of school and before I go to college. I could make some money and build a good foundation for myself." If the students pass the certification test, organizers say it is a great way to get their foot in the door for high-demand jobs drawing blood in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, or blood banks.
