The Town with One Resident

Monowi, Nebraska is an incorporated village in Boyd County, Nebraska which cover 0.21 sq miles or 0.54 sq km in size. Monowi, in a Native American language means flower. This village was named this because of the abundance of wildflowers growing in the area.

Monowi was patented in 1902 when the Elkhorn railway was expanded to that point. A post office was setup in 1902 that operated until 1967. The peak years were around the 1930s when the village had a population of 150. A census was done in 2000 and the population was 2. Rudy and Elsie Eiler a married couple were the only remaining residents of Monowi. In 2004 Rudy died leaving 83 year old Elsie as the only resident of Monowi today.

Elsie is the town’s mayor, librarian and bartender. She has granted herself a liquor licence and pays taxes to herself. The village has 4 street lights that are funded by the government as long has Elsie continues to provide a municipal road plan. The town’s budget is $500 a year.

Elsie founded and manages a 5000 volume library named Rudy’s Library after her husband as well as the town tavern which draws in regular customers as far away as 80 miles or 128 km. Elsie isn’t a recluse though, the town tavern sees all sorts of people coming in from crew working on the road to local farmers. She gets food delivered to run the tavern but Monowi has 2 groceries stores only 7 miles or 11km away. Elise along with Monowi has been featured on tv numerous times as well here, on youtube.

The town has a few buildings including the tavern, post office, 3 houses, a few stores which are falling apart, at one point a school and a church which was last used for a funeral service for her father in 1960. The church was used a handful of times for other functions over the years but was eventually sold to a bee keeper.
