After the palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834, it was decided that the new buildings for the Houses of Parliament should boast a tower and a clock. Out of the ashes of disaster a new landmark was born: the tower that would come to be affectionately known as ‘Big Ben’. Designed with precision, each clock dial was made up of 312 pieces of glass and the four faces of the clock are now illuminated every night to provide a spectacular view. Big Ben – recently named ‘Elizabeth Tower’ in honour of the Queen’s reign – has never stopped chiming; even when the House of Commons was bombed in the Second World War, Big Ben survived and continued to strike the hours. Therefore, this clock tower has come to symbolise all that is great about Britain: beauty, skill and determination in the face of adversity.
