Known as the ‘Lungs of the Planet' the Amazon Rainforest produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen. The rainforest also makes up more than 50% of the entire world's remaining rainforests.

The Amazon rainforest is huge, it covers most of the Amazon Basin in South America. The amazon rainforest covers 2.1 million square miles of the total 2.7 million square mile amazon basin. To put this into perspective if the Amazon rainforest was a country, it would rank 9th in size.

There are nine nations that border the amazon rainforest: Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Ecuador, Guyana and French Guiana.

The Amazon River is considered to be the life force of the Amazon rainforest. It runs through the middle of the amazon rainforest which is almost entirely in Brazil. The river stretches 6400 km or 4000 miles in length.

6. Amazing Animals - 1:53
It should come as no surprise that the Amazon Rainforest is home to some amazing animals. The anaconda lurks in shallow waters along the Amazon River along with flesh eating piranha. Those aren’t the only creatures lurking in the waters, black caiman, a massive alligator can be found there too as well as electric eels and bull shark. On land jaguars, the world’s 3rd largest cat, can be found dominating the jungle. The cougar is also found in the Amazon but usually in areas with less density. The toucan is the loudest creature in the Amazon.

Crippling droughts in 2005 and 2010 wiped out large amounts of vegetation in the Amazon Rainforest. Threatening the rainforest further it is estimated around 5 billion trees are cut down in the rainforest every year, that's the size of South Carolina or the Czech Republic being clear cut to raise cattle to meet the rising demand for meat in South America.

Long ago in 1500 there were between 6 and 9 million natives living in the Amazon. Today it’s estimated there are only 250,000 remaining. 50 Amazon native tribes who have never been in contact with the rest of civilization.

The Amazon is home to 10% of all the world’s known species.
205 species of birds, 3000 types of fish, 40,000 species of plants and around 2.5 million insect species all live in this rainforest.

Over 80% of the food humans consume in the developed world came from the Amazon Rainforest. Foods like coconuts, figs, lemons, grapefruit, avocados, oranges, guavas, bananas, pineapples, tomatoes, mangoes, potatoes, rice, corn, winter squash and yams. There are plenty of spices that originated from there as well like turmeric, cayenne, black pepper, cinnamon cloves, ginger, as well as other foods like vanilla, chocolate, coffee, sugar cane, brazil nuts and cashews.

The Amazon basin contains 1/5 of the world’s freshwater. The rainfall patterns are so strong in the Amazon that they affect weather patterns as far away as the United States.
The trees are so tightly packed that it can take 10 minutes for the rain to reach the ground below.
