15 Puzzling Facts about the Human Body

The human body is a magical thing. To this day scientists still can’t figure out exactly how it works. No matter how many discoveries are made there seem to be an endless amount waiting to be discovered. Many of the things we do know about the body most people wouldn’t believe unless there was science to prove it.. On this episode we’ll cover 15 puzzling facts about the human body.

15. The human body drops into a deep sleep between the hours of 11pm and 2am. This is called REM or rapid eye movement. REM makes up 25% of total sleep and when the most vivid dreams occur.
14. Bone marrow is responsible for creating red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body.
13. The average adult has 32 teeth.
12. Humans not only have unique fingerprints but unique tongue prints as well.
11. Taking a dose of antibiotics will only help fight bacteria in the body not viruses.
10. 25% of the total amount of oxygen used by the body goes to the brain.
9. A human heart beats around 100,000 times a day 36 million times a year and over a billion times by age 30.
8. A human’s sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than the sense of taste.
7. Human skin color is dependant upon the amount of pigment melanin produced. Lesser amounts result in lighter skin, greater amounts in darker skin.
6. The surface area of the lungs are around 750 sq feet or 70 sq meters or the size of a tennis court.
5. The staples or stirrup is the smallest bone in the human body. It’s located deep inside the ear canal in an area called middle ear and measure 1/10 of an inch or 2.8mm long.
4. The ears and nose will never stop growing throughout life, this is why they are so large on old people.
3. The average person blinks 10 times per minute where a baby only blinks 1 to 2 times per minute.
2. The right half of the brain controls the left side of the body and the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body.
1. It takes 12 hours for the body to completely digest the food in your stomach.
