The Olympic Sport You’ve Never Heard Of
Did you know there was an Olympic sport where skiers performed a ballet routine and tricks on skis?! On this episode, we’ll unveil the long lost art of ski ballet.

Ski Ballet, later renamed acroski was a freestyle skiing discipline that existed from the late 1960s until the year 2000. Featured in 1988 during the Calgary and the 1992 Albertville Olympics, this sport is a little mind boggling at first, you’ve got to wonder how many sprained ankles they get?

This choreographed routine featured flips, spins, jumps, leg crossings, rolls, and even splits all on skis. After the mid 1970s these routines were performed to music over a minute and a half. Briefly in the 1980s pair ballet competitions were included which featured 2 skiers dancing, performing tricks and doing synchronized movements. Skiers are required to do 16 moves in their routines, 4 must come from the jump category, 4 from the flip category and 8 linking maneuvers. Just like any other olympic event skiers were judged on a set of criteria by a panel of judges.

After ski ballet’s demonstration event showing during the Calgary and Albertville Olympics, interest in the sport diminished after it wasn’t added to the list of olympic events. In 2000 the International Ski Federation ceased all formal competition of the sport.

What is your take on this long lost sport? I’ve got to say this is more entertaining than synchronized swimming, let us know what your thoughts are in the comments down below.
