China has always been known as the manufacturing capital of the world but with the sudden rise of electronics a hub for this production was chosen by the Chinese government. Shenzhen, what was once a normal fishing community which is located close to the border between China and Hong Kong. Shenzhen was chosen as China’s first special economic zone to attract overseas investors with unique policy offers, this strategy worked fast forward 30 years later, Shenzhen is now one of China’s largest and wealthiest cities.
90% of the world’s electronics come from Shenzhen, China which is known as “the world’s factory”. This includes products like mobile phones, drones, televisions, monitors, air conditioning units, toys, light bulbs, circuit boards, and wearable tech.
This city is home to the largest electronics shopping mall on the planet called Huaqiangbei Commercial Street electronics market which has 20 different shopping malls across 70 million square feet or 6.5 million square meters which is around 1215 football fields in size.
The term “made in China” is now being replaced by “designed in China” as Chinese companies grow are starting to develop their own full line of products and not just manufacture others. This isn’t always done in an ethical manner though, some shady companies are notorious for ripping off designs are lightning speed like this kickstarter project called Stikbox. Yekutiel Sherman invented this product which is a self stick built into a smart phone case, within 1 week of the launch of his kickstarter campaign ads were popping up on AliExpress, which is basically China’s Amazon, selling his product with his name. The scammers clearly have no shame and no fear of any repercussions as they priced the product at $10 drastically undercutting the original price of $47.
Recently a company called Tsumbay sent me a few of their products with no strings attached. They sent me these bluetooth headphones and their alarm clock. I was expecting them to be low quality pieces of junk because they are priced at $20 for the headphones and $35 for the alarm clock but to my surprise they are actually both really good. I’ve been using the Tsumbay headphones almost everyday outside as I build a fence and setup my garden for the season. They’re waterproof and last about 8 hours on a single charge which always outlasts the battery on my phone as I listen to podcasts. Comparing the quality of sound, I have a pair of Bose Sport wired headphones which are the best of the best in terms of sound quality, surprisingly though the Tsumbay wireless ones are almost as good. They don’t have quite as much deep richness in the bass as the bose ones but at 1/5th the cost they’re a good deal. The alarm clock has numerous wake up sounds, can connect via bluetooth to your phone to answer calls, has multiple levels of led brightness and can play music. I used to have a bose soundlink mini which sounds fantastic, the Tsumbay alarm clock’s speaker is once again almost as good but lacking a little bit of depth to the base just as with the headphones. The alarm clock is also 1/5 the price of the bose, so once again Tsumbay is providing good value for the dollar. If you’re interested in either of these products I’ll link them down below.
Other products like Chinese cell phones are starting to take market share away from the big players being Samsung and Apple. Companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, and OnePlus are offering many of the same features in their phones at ½ or ⅓ the price.
