Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006
Rotterdam, Netherlands
With much fanfare, the second ABN AMRO boat was christened in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Saturday, after 16 months of preparation and over two years of planning. Skipper Mike SANDERSON (NZL) was more than excited to finally be on board the boat he will be sailing during the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006.
'This boat is the highest quality boat of any I know,' SANDERSON enthused. 'I've never seen anything like it. It really has been taken to a whole new level!'

The ABN AMRO ONE was officially christened in the Royal Yacht and Rowing Club de Maas, right next to the city's crowning landmark, the Erasmus Bridge.

ABN AMRO employees helped to kick start the event by releasing confetti and to the steady and throbbing beat of a drum band, Slagerij van Kampen, the black boat docked with all the flags of the sailors of TEAM ABN AMRO.

After a speech commemorating the rich maritime history of the Dutch, the boat was wished well on its journey and officially christened by the traditional bottle of champagne against its bow.

The first TEAM ABN AMRO boat to be put on the water was christened in Portugal and that first generation Volvo Ocean 70 will be used by the sailors of crew TWO.

Race to Save Sailor Washed Overboard in Darkness Is Lost

The boat was plowing through the night in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean yesterday, its skipper dodging through 15-foot waves and four crew members straining against the sails when a wall of water rolled up from behind. The bow nosed downward, and the sea roared overhead.

When the deck cleared, Hans Horrevoets was gone.

The skipper, Sébastien Josse, immediately sounded a man-overboard alert, but at a speed of nearly half a nautical mile a minute, the boat was almost 10 miles beyond Horrevoets, a helmsman, by the time it could turn.

An hour later, after a frantic and harrowing struggle against low visibility and treacherous waves, crew members somehow found Horrevoets's body, but could not revive him.

ABN AMRO Bank N.V. is a Dutch bank with headquarters in Amsterdam. ABN AMRO Bank is the third-largest bank in the Netherlands.[3] It was re-established in its current form in 2009, following the acquisition and break-up of the original ABN AMRO by a banking consortium consisting of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, Santander Group and Fortis. Following the collapse of Fortis, who acquired the Dutch business, it was nationalized by the Dutch government along with Fortis Bank Nederland.[4] It was relisted as a public company again in 2015.
