Fantasea the Disneyland of Thailand

Fantasea is a wacky disneyland like place in Phuket Thailand, minus the rides. There are a plethora of stores all built with a distinct theme.

Examples:
-Golden Palace
-Underwater store
-Diamond white elephant palace
-Jungle forest

There are over 10 different stores all with different themes, most of them connect one to the other without going outside as well. Along with the stores there are also 2 different buffets customers can choose to eat at as well as elephant riding, a white tiger exhibit, carnival games and random booths outside the shops that try to sell you things and get really mad if you film them for some reason.

Inside the white tiger exhibit, there are 2 white tigers stuck in this plexiglass box with people’s camera flashes going off all day. One of the white tigers looks like he’s just waiting for death and the other one is losing his mind, trying to find a way to escape. He constantly paces back and forth grunting and growling. I mean look at that cage, there isn’t even a leaf, branch, dirt, grass or anything soft to lay on or hard to bite on, plain and simple it’s animal abuse. Let’s move on. After you’ve had enough time shopping, and saw all the other animals in the white tiger exhibit, there is also a handful of carnival games you can play. It’s pretty typical overpriced carnival games but something to waste some money if you simply have too much.

There are elephant rides that go around the streets of Fantasea but I’d refrain from doing so if you visit this place. To tame an elephant to be ridden is a brutal and barbaric practice, best not to support that. The main attraction of Fantasea is the Big show at the end of the night. A call for seating to start is heard throughout the park and everyone flocks to get their seat. Long corridors are filled with people who end up at desk with multiple staff that force you to remove anything and everything that can record images. So if you have a $3500 camera hanging around your neck and a $1000 Iphone in your pocket both must be surrendered. Your belonging are put into a wicker basket that is placed behind the counter. You’ll be given a ticket with a number and color for pickup later. Once you turn the next corridor you’ll be searched by staff to make sure you infact did surrender your cameras and phones. There is one last hallway that leads to the show where baby tigers and baby elephants are on display to get your picture petting them, for a price of course.

The show at Fantasea is full of acrobatic dance, tigers and elephant tricks. The human preformed tricks and dance are all very entertaining, which have a story line, are themed and often includes fire. At one point a young tiger is let loose to run across the stage to a trainer on the other side of the stage, this is the point in the show where you don’t want to be sitting in the first row, just in case that tiger gets a little hungry. The finale of the show has a long line of elephants who stand up putting their front legs on the elephant next to them with a chain of something like 20 elephants doing this at once. It’s a shame they have the animal elements at Fantasea as it taints the experience with a sour note. The tigers are enslaved, the elephants go through hell to be able to be trained to do these tricks when really they aren’t needed. I’m sure there is a way to incorporate these animals while they live in a happy free situation. Overall the experience at Fantasea will be a mixed bag of good and bag, the highlight being the incredible store build outs and the fire dancing in the show.

Now if you’re wondering the about admission, the fee is $52 for the show alone or $63 with buffet. Both of these admissions will give you access to the rest of the park with all the shops and games.
