Adding Z Wave to a VISTA System
In this video, Joe talks about adding Z-Wave smart home capabilities to a Honeywell VISTA Alarm System. There are two ways for a user to do this. The user can either add a Honeywell Vista Automation Module (VAM) to their panel, or they can use a Honeywell Tuxedo Touch Keypad. Both options will work.
Z-Wave smart home automation is one of the coolest features available for an alarm system. The main benefit to Z-Wave devices is that they can be controlled remotely using the Total Connect 2.0 interactive service. A user can access this service at any time through either a web browser or the Total Connect 2.0 Mobile App on their iOS or Android device. This allows them to operate their Z-Wave devices from virtually anywhere in the world. But remember, the VISTA System will need an IP or a cellular connection to integrate with Total Connect.
A Z-Wave device can be controlled in this manner at any time. But it is also possible to have Z-Wave devices activate automatically based on a predetermined schedule or with certain system events. This is made possible through rules and scenes that can be established through Total Connect. So if a user wants to have a Z-Wave scene trigger when they disarm their system or when they walk into a room and set off a motion sensor, they can create one through Total Connect. Most users find that setting up new rules and scenes is very easy.
Both the Honeywell VAM and the Tuxedo Touch will make this possible. The VAM is strictly a Z-Wave controller, and it offers no other functionality for the system. But it is a quick and easy way to get Z-Wave functionality for a Honeywell VISTA. On the other hand, the Tuxedo Touch doubles as a touchscreen keypad for the VISTA System. This makes it great for arming and disarming. A user can even perform programming functions from the Tuxedo Touch. However, a Tuxedo Touch should not be used as a primary programming option, as it offers no backdoor method that allows the user to get back into programming if they ever get locked out.
