Hailing from south america is a monkey with distinct facial hair. On this episode we bring you the Emperor tamarin.

Found in lowland tropical rainforests in south america, this tamarin is found in Brazil, Bolivia, peru and the southwestern Amazon Basin. Two subspecies exist, the bearded emperor tamarin and the black-chinned emperor tamarin.

Measuring up to 16 inches or almost ½ a meter in length and weighing 2 lbs or almost 1 kg this monkey has a small body, long claws, and prehensile tail. Their tail can be used as a 5th hand when traversing tree branches. This stylish grey monkey sporting the iconic curly white mustache has a head, hands and feet that are almost black with the rest of the body being a tint of grey with golden yellow fur mixed in. Looking like a mix of different animals, the emperor tamarin has a red tail to complete the mismatched look.

Its name originates from having a similar mustache to this old timer, German emperor Wilhelm II. Being a diurnal animal, or one that is active during the day, they are rarely found on the forest floor. This would make them an easy lunch for their top predators so they stay high up in the trees where they have protection and all the food they need.

Snakes, wild cats, dogs and birds of prey all will chow down on a tamarin given the chance.

Having an omnivorous diet, the emperor tamarin consumes lizards, insects, eggs, small reptiles, tree sap, nectar and fruit.

Oddly enough the males and â…“ of the females are dichromats allowing them to only see two colors where the other â…” of the females are trichromats able to see 3 colors just as humans do. This 3rd color allows those females to more accurately identify if fruit is properly ripe, regardless of that the other females and males do just fine without it.

Living in groups of up to 25, these troops are led by a female elder. These troops mark out a designated area as their territory which they will defend.
A strong group bond is created from grooming and their chatter. Communicating through vocal sounds the tamarin will chirp and hiss which is everyday dialog for them.

Between April and July is mating season for the emperor tamarin. Mother’s will be pregnant for 145 days before giving birth to 1 or 2 babies. When born the collective group will all take care of the babies. Females will clean them while males are on grooming and transportation duties.

The young will start eating after a month and ½ and be fully independent by 1 to 1 ½ years old.
Able to create their own children at 2 years of age the cycle begins again. Living up to 20 years in the wild the emperor tamarin don’t have a threatened population but their numbers have started to decline. Cattle ranching to support the increased demand for meat in South America is to blame. It’s not surprising the tamarin’s population has started to decline considering they bulldozing a football field of land every 1 second in the amazon. The question is how many more years before there is no more amazon rainforest, and no more creatures like the emperor tamarin?
