NOVICE BUILDER Constructs a COLD HARDY KIWI TRELLIS

On the previous episode I planted seeds in the ground, on this episode I built a trellis for my cold hardy kiwis.

Starting off we can take a look at my deck, this will be the location for my cold hard kiwis but first I need to build a trellis that’ll be attached to the side of it. I bought a handful cedar boards and started to lay out the spacing. I chose cedar as it’s naturally resistant to rotting with all the rain we get here on vancouver island in the winter.

I left these boards at full 7 foot length to minimize the cuts required as I don’t have a chop saw. I attached them to the deck posts and start cutting the angled beams. After a handful of painstaking hacksaw cuts and plenty of screws I had something that looked like it was strong enough to hold many pounds of vegetation. After screwing it all together, it was a little wobbly so I added 2 more boards to connect it to my house for stability. Here we have the mostly final trellis. Once the vines start climbing up it I’ll add a couple 2” pine boards across the top to fill in the gap. This concludes this episode, be sure to hit that like button if you found this entertaining.
