How to Plant Garlic and Shallots: Hardneck and Softneck Varieties. Learn all about preparing and planting garlic and shallots! All the tips you'll need to know to sprout successful and healthy garlip. I'll be planting red and white hardneck garlic, white softneck garlic, elephant garlic, red hardneck garlic, and shallots. I'll give you some tips on soaking your garlic for the best health of the cloves. I DO NOT use baking soda or alcohol in my soaking solution. Only things that promote soil and microbial health. Be sure to get your garlic in the ground by November 15th!
