Did you know in downtown Bangkok is a massive skyscraper that is completely abandoned? On this episode, we take a look at Bangkok’s Ghost Tower.

The Sathorn Unique Tower or “Ghost Tower” is a 47 story luxury residential condominium complex but was abandoned when it was 80% complete after the Asian financial crisis in 1997. During this crisis over 300 high rise construction projects across Bangkok were halted or cancelled. Construction began in 1990 but the architect of this tower was arrested in 1993 for plotting to take out the President of the Supreme Court. No attack was ever made but he was found guilty in 2008 but later acquitted in 2010.

The Sathorn Unique Condominium (which was once it’s official name) has a living quarters tower plus connected adjacent is a 10 story parking garage which sprawls across 3,200 square meters or 34,000 sq ft of land. It is believed to be haunted with rumors stating a ghost lives on the 25th floor. Making a good set for a movie production the horror film the promise was filmed there 2017.

Initially these guys from Team Farang snuck into the building and filmed footage free running within the tower. After this footage blew up the owner of the Sathorn tower pressed charges against them to create an example of what happens to people who sneak into the building. This hasn’t stopped tourists though, they often just bride guards between 5 - 25 bucks to get in to snap some pictures. This flow of cash than spurred on one of the employees of the tower security to open it up for guided tours for 6 hours a day. Little did anyone know this employee was just running this operation on their own without permission and after a youtube video was posted and the real owner saw it the guided tours were shut down. This along with reports of a tourist throwing rocks off the top have caused security to clamp down and a door up to the 2nd level of this tower has been welded shut making it hard to see this abandoned skyscraper.

Not only seen in the Team Farang video but Exploring with Josh and fellow Vancouverite Lost Leblanc both have footage of the entire tower if you want to see the whole thing.

You might be wondering why this building has been sitting here for 20 years with no change to it. Rumors state the owner of this building is holding out at a price of 60 million dollars for this vacant tower. No one wants to buy the tower has it’ll need to be demolished to use the land as the basement is flooded and the foundation is beyond repair.
