Did you know that only in India there is a fat, blubbery frog that looks like a mole. On this episode of world’s weirdest animals, we take a look at the pig nosed frog.

Going by the names of purple frog, indian purple frog, or pignose frog is this round bodied frog with a small head that has a distinctive snout. Being dark purplish in color when an adult, females are longer than males by an additional 25%. Living in burrows up to 12 feet or almost 4 meters deep, the pig nosed frog can be found ranging from the Camel’s Hump Hill Range all the way to the most northern point of the Agasthyamalai Hill Range in the south of the Western Ghats of India.

Living most of its life underwater, the pignose frog will only surface during the monsoon season for 2 weeks when its mating season. A tadpole was discovered and documented in 1918 but it wasn’t until 2003 when it was scientifically described and documented. There aren’t a lot of field researchers out and about during the monsoon season which allowed this frog to stay hidden from view for so long. Mating usually happens along temporary rainwater streams caused by the downpour. They’ll hang out there and call for a mate. Rock pools will be home to over 3000 eggs which will hatch into tadpoles after 100 days. Typically burrowing species of frogs will find food above ground but the purple frog tend to find food underground consisting mainly of termites which it sucks in with their sensitive snout.

Now you must be wondering what they sound like, they producing a harsh chirpy croak that sounds somewhat like a chicken clucking.

In the wild only 135 individuals are known with only 3 of those being female. Coffee, cardamom, and ginger plantations have been encroaching on their habitat and seeing as they only live within a small region of the world the future survival of this endangered species doesn’t look good. Despite the plantations their biggest predator has been tribes people living in the area, catching and eating these frogs. Their numbers were significantly higher 15 years ago but with barely any left maybe this will force the tribes people to drop this tradition of eating the purple frog and allow their numbers to recover.

How important or do you think it is important to save every species of animal we can? Share your thoughts down below. I hope you enjoyed this episode, if you’re thinking of subscribing to a channel today, consider ours, and until the next one have a good one.
