Ottawa (/ˈɒtəwə/ (About this soundlisten), /ˈɒtəwɑː/; French pronunciation: [ɔtawa]) is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR).[12] As of 2016, Ottawa had a city population of 934,243 and a metropolitan population of 1,323,783 making it the fourth-largest city and the fifth-largest CMA in Canada. In June 2019, the City of Ottawa estimated it had surpassed a population of 1 million.[13]

Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city has evolved into the political centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River, the name of which is derived from the Algonquin Odawa, meaning "to trade".[14]

Ottawa has the most educated population among Canadian cities[15] and is home to a number of post-secondary, research, and cultural institutions, including the National Arts Centre, the National Gallery, and numerous national museums. Ottawa has the highest standard of living in the nation and low unemployment.[16]

The City of Ottawa is a single-tier municipality, meaning it is in itself a census division and has no county or regional municipality government above it.[177] As a single-tier municipality, Ottawa has responsibility for all municipal services, including fire, emergency medical services, police, parks, roads, sidewalks, public transit, drinking water, storm water, sanitary sewage and solid waste. Ottawa is governed by the 24-member Ottawa City Council consisting of 23 councillors each representing one ward and the mayor, currently Jim Watson,[178] elected in a citywide vote.

United Airlines, Inc. is a major American airline headquartered at Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois.[13][14][15] It is the 3rd largest airline in the world, measured by fleet size and route network. United operates a large domestic and international route network, with an extensive presence in the Asia-Pacific region.[16] It is a founding member of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance with a total of 28 member airlines.[17] Regional service is operated by independent carriers under the brand name United Express. United was established by the amalgamation of several airlines in the late 1920s, the oldest of these being Varney Air Lines, which was founded in 1926.[1]

United has eight hubs, with Chicago–O'Hare being its largest in terms of passengers carried and the number of departures.[18]

United Airlines headquarters are located at the Willis Tower, 233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois. [38]

In 2007, United had moved its headquarters from Elk Grove Township, a suburb of Chicago, to 77 West Wacker Drive in the Chicago Loop[39] after receiving US$5.5 million in incentives from the City of Chicago.[40]

Then in 2010, United accepted the City of Chicago's offer of US$35 million in incentives, including a US$10 million grant, for United to move its remaining 2,500 employees out of Elk Grove Township to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in the Chicago Loop.[40] On May 31, 2012, United opened its operations center, which occupied twelve floors there.[41] In 2019 United renewed its lease at Willis Tower, originally ending in 2028 and now set to expire in 2033, and plans to construct a roof deck and a 30,000 sq ft (2,800 m2) dining hall on the fourth floor.[42]

The former headquarters campus at Elk Grove Township was gradually annexed into the Village of Mount Prospect,[43][44] and serves as an IT operations facility, with a new 172,000 sq ft (16,000 m2) data center constructed in 2013.[45]
