I have never used Kick Starter and had no idea how it worked so I asked the QubeStove representative that sent the stove I used in this video and this was her explanation:

2. Q: What are the risks of purchasing on Kickstarter? Are products purchased on Kickstarter guaranteed for delivery?
A: For Kickstarter, there is no guarantee, but we are an already established company with products sold at Home Depot, Walmart, etc. so we take our reputation very seriously. Our estimated shipping dates are correct and we fully intend to fulfill the orders on time.

3. Q: All of my life I have been under the impression that you could not sell a product that you did not have produced.
A: "Backers" (people who support a campaign) can pre-order items on Kickstarter at a steep discount in order to support and be the first to own innovative products.

To summarize you can save a considerable amount of money pre-ordering on Kick Starter, but delivery takes over a month and is not guaranteed and you cannot request a refund even if you never receive the product you ordered.
