Introduction to the different types and forms of wands, barbells, sticks and staves used for exercise in 19th century Europe and America, in which we examine both antique specimens and historical replicas. The "wand" was an immensely popular exercise tool during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, used to cultivate flexibility, strength, mental development. It was also used in combative exercises, and gave rise to the modern barbell.
This video was made as part of the ongoing "Getting Back in Shape with 19th Century Historical Exercises" series, which will continue on this channel, "Physical Culture Historians".
