Daniel Bongino, a former member of law enforcement and
now a conservative podcast host, advocated against calls
to cut funding to police departments around the United
States as a measure of public safety reform. Bongino told
the House Judiciary Committee on June 10 that the U.S.
"can and should commit to police accountability without
shredding the thin wall between civilization and chaos."
"There are officers, no question, who aren't suited for the
job and who cause trouble, sometimes worse. We've seen
that. But, in my experience, this is rare and becoming
rarer Bongino said. In May, a Minneapolis police officer
kneeled on the neck of George Floyd for nearly nine
minutes, leading to his death. That officer, Derek Chauvin,
has been charged with second-degree murder.
Bongino served as a New York police officer and a U.S.
Secret Service agent, and has made three unsuccessful
bids at running for Congress. In his testimony, he
remembered officers and firefighters who died in the 9/11
attacks, saying, "the defund the police movement will
target these heroes. They ARE the police, these people. It's
nat some amornhous mass that uill be affected it's real
