RedTails Flying Academy
Only 3.4% of commercial pilots are Black, and a non-profit organization inspired by the Tuskegee Airmen is striving to diversify the pool of commercial pilots. RedTail Flying Academy says its goal is to develop a pipeline of aviators from underserved communities, starting with flight training, which can cost upwards of $100,000. The RedTails, as the Tuskegee Airmen were known during WWII, fought segregation and Jim Crow laws in the United States as they fought Nazis and Axis powers overseas.
