Protestors angry at a proposed $500mn US aid grant apparently threatening their country’s sovereignty were targeted with tear gas and rubber bullets by police amidst violent clashes.

Cops reportedly beat protestors with batons in response to stones thrown by protestors, who oppose a deal that they fear will pave the way for US troops to be posted to the Himalayan nation.

The grant agreement has already split the coalition government ahead of the 28 February ratification deadline, as the US threatens to 'review its relationship' with Nepal if it is rejected.
