Delegates at the annual #BMA (#BritishMedicalAssociation) conference voted by a narrow majority to restrict the number of places at medical schools to avoid "overproduction of doctors with limited career opportunities." They also agreed on a complete ban on opening new medical schools.

The government (or rather the BMA) puts a cap on university places for British people to study medicine for literally no reason. The BMA is effectively a closed-shop union, something that is generally illegal in Great Britain. https://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a748
