Reliefs are 3-dimensional sculptures and carvings that are mostly made on stone. This form of carving is mostly found in temples, shrines, monuments and ancient historical places. In Indonesia, the relief on the walls of the Borobudur temple is one example that is used to describe the life of the Buddha and his teachings. In Europe, carvings on ancient temples of the Parthenon can also be preserved until now as a relic of Greek history.

These reliefs can be carvings that stand alone, or as part of other relief panels, forming a series of stories or advice. At the Borobudur Temple itself, for example, there are more than 1,400 relief panels which are used to tell all the teachings of Gautama Buddha.
