No Studio, Small Budget, No Problem

Hey everybody, Jonathan here from Glitz & Glam TV Productions. A while back I did a video called The Poor Man's Podcast talking about the Fifine USB microphone. A very fine USB microphone at a very low price. But if you're willing and able to invest a little more money, you can sound like a pro. And THAT is what this video is all about.

Welcome to part 2! No Studio, Small Budget, No Problem!

We're gonna start with issue number one before moving on to issue number 2. The first issue is, you don't have a studio. This major detail will most definitely dictate the type of microphone you will need to get in order for all of this to be a success.

I'm not going to make any assumptions that you know alot about microphones since there may be some absolute beginners tuning in to this video. So I will start off by saying, there are a few different types of microphones and they all behave very differently. Choosing the wrong microphone for a situation could be disastrous to your production.

You might have been told that you need to get a shotgun mic or a condenser mic in order to kick off your podcast. However, let's keep in mind, we dont have a studio to work with here. This could pose a very big problem. Condenser mics work great and produce exceptional audio quality but they require a studio-like setting in order to produce desired results. This is largely due to the highly sensitive pick-up these mics possess. So if you're in less than perfect conditions for recording your audio, this is probably not going to be the best choice.

Omnidirectional mics such as lavalier mics are super convenient but you will definitely sound far from a pro. Omnidirectional microphones pick up sound from the environment you're in so being in less than perfect recording conditions would also make this a bad choice.

Where does that leave us? Enter the unidirectional dynamic microphone. Like the shotgun or condenser mics, it only accepts sound from one direction but it's sensitivity or pick-up is much much lower than the condenser mic. For our purposes, that is a GOOD thing!

When speaking into a unidirectional dynamic microphone, it picks up your voice while rejecting most, if not all of the surrounding environment. This allows you to be in less than perfect recording conditions and still produce clean audio.

Right now, I'm sitting in my car using the Shure SM57 microphone to record this video. And you probably thought I was in an office or studio. Well, dont go telling anyone, but I get most of my work done in unconventional situations and locations. But this here is proof that its possible!

For about $300 give or take, if you include the mic, the audio recorder, and all of its accessories, you can record clean, high quality audio just about anywhere as long as you find a relatively quiet spot.

You will of course need audio editing software to edit your podcast, but that's a topic for another video. The focal point of this video is that high quality audio is achievable on a low budget if you're seeking a pro sound with less than pro conditions. It CAN be done.
