On January 31, 1919, the BSSR seceded from the RSFSR and was declared independent by the decree of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee "On recognition of the independence of the Belarusian Socialist Soviet Republic" (published on February 5). On February 27, 1919, the eastern regions of Soviet Belarus were transferred to the RSFSR, and the western regions were merged with the Lithuanian Soviet Republic into the Lithuanian-Belarusian SSR, which de facto ceased to exist a few months later during the Soviet-Polish war.
