Can You Turn a Diamond to Coal?

If we could hone our paths in life, what would we do? Would we merely make ourselves truer to our actual desired mission/path in life, or could we completely change direction?

Hypothetically speaking, I believe such tools to allow us to hone our paths would, for the most part, only clear the dust from the diamond, not turn it to coal.
