It is named after Saint Peter, the patron Saint of the founding Tsar, but over time it became more and more associated with the name of Peter I. the City is historically and culturally associated with the birth of the Russian Empire and Russia's entry into modern history as a European great power.

It is located in the North-West of the country, on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and at the mouth of the Neva river. It borders the Leningrad region and also has Maritime borders with Finland and Estonia.

Saint Petersburg is home to the constitutional court of the Russian Federation, the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation, the Leningrad region authorities, and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. The main command of the Navy and the headquarters of the Western military district of the Russian Armed forces are also located.
