Heavy rains on Tuesday triggered landslides and floods. In a little more than six hours, 260 liters of precipitation fell per square meter. This is much more than usually happens in this region of Brazil in February.
The governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, arrived in the rain-affected region on Wednesday. Earlier, he described the current situation as "close to war." At a press conference on Wednesday, he said that the rain that hit the region was "the heaviest since 1932."
