With discussions of Galileo and René Descartes, in this lecture we see how Aristotle's vision of the world began to collapse in the early 17th century, causing a crisis and launching a search for a new new way of thinking about things.

We see how the mind-body skeptical problem first came into sharp relief as the result of these first thinkers of the Renaissance. This resulted in The Enlightenment, and its sharp responses to the gap their work created. We will continue this discussion in the next talk in the series.

Primary sources referred to in this discussion include:

* The Assayer, by Galileo Galilei, 1623
* Meditations on First Philosophy, by René Descartes, 1641

Secondary sources mentioned:

* Russell, Jeffrey Burton. Inventing the Flat Earth: Columbus and Modern Historians. New York: Praeger, 1991.
