Puppy learns to 'talk' using technology.
Every pet owner swears blindly that he can hold a conversation with his pet and that he is able not only to understand what we say, but also, in a sense, to respond. But what if your dog could talk, what would he say? That's what Christina Hunger, an American pathologist specializing in speech and language, tried to find out.
Christina works with Alternative Communication Systems, used to enable patients with speech difficulties to communicate with the world. Often these systems are pictures with icons that, when pressed, produce a corresponding word. Christina's idea was to see how her one-year-old dog Stella would behave in front of a similar system.
With a lot of training, the dog quickly learned to use the button to ask to leave the house. Her owner then started adding buttons with more words. The most surprising thing was when the dog began to combine words, forming sentences to better express herself. Things like I want to walk outside and I want food.
According to Christina, the dog is already at a level where she uses both compound sentences and simple words to express herself: in one day Stella is able to speak 20 times, using 11 different words from the system. According to research a dog understands an average of 165 words, and can reach a vocabulary of 250 words.
