In this Walleye ice fishing video we are ice fishing on Saginaw Bay in Saginaw Michigan. Technically we are Fishing in Saginaw River right at the opening of the mouth to Saginaw Bay. I have only gone ice fishing for walleye one time previous to this trip and on that trip we were ice fishing the Saginaw River near the Zilwaukee Bridge. On that Michigan Walleye Fishing adventure we got nothing but dink walleye. And I don’t even mean almost keepers, just tiny little walleye. But on this particular Michigan ice fishing adventure we not only managed to find a few keeper walleye but the majority of the walleye we caught were within an inch or two of keeper size. No hogs whatsoever but we had a few hours of reasonably steady walleye fishing action through the ice.Show more

Saginaw bay is among the first things people think about when they think about ice fishing Michigan. Saginaw Bay on Lake Erie is known for being an excellent Walleye fishery. Saginaw bay and Lake Erie in general have the reputation for producing trophy walleye as well as steady limits of keeper walleye. So everybody knows that ice fishing the Saginaw Bay in Michigan can be epic for walleye as well as other species and ice fishing Saginaw bay is no exception. The biggest problem with ice fishing Saginaw bay is that to get to the really good spots a four wheeler or a snowmobile is ideal. However if you are looking for keeper size walleye and don’t wish to walk very far the mouth of the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay is a great option.

Since Jason and I are both new to ice fishing in general let alone ice fishing for walleye we couldn’t turn down an opportunity to go ice fishing for walleye with our friend Dustin Lehnert who is in the absolute fishing guru. Ice fishing for walleye is more of a seasonal past time for Dustin who spends most of the year guiding for steelhead and salmon in West Michigan but like I said before it’s hard to turn down a trip to Saginaw Bay to go after walleye or perch.

Before we left on the trip I asked Dustin what type of lures we should use and his first suggestion was the Rapala Jigging Rap so we brought a few of those and I brought my Steelshad blade baits. I have become a huge believer in the steelshad blade baits ever since I got one two years ago and caught a monster pike on it the first time I used it. Since then mostly just in the last year I began using steelshad blade baits more regularly and I have successfully caught catfish, dog fish, coho salmon, Walleye, bass, perch, bluegill and maybe even some more things that I’m not remembering at the moment on Steelshad blade baits. This was my first time using a steel shed blade bait ice fishing but I knew it would work because the last time I fished Saginaw Bay in the summer I was dead sticking a Steelshad blade bait over the bow of the boat while we were using perch rigs to catch perch. And that day I caught several fish deadsticking Steelshad just letting the motion of the waves jig the lure for me. Ultimately most of the fish we caught were on the Rapala Jigging Rap, and the steelshad and a few on spoons. As well as tips on what we were to use ice fishing for walleye we also show some sonar fishing tips and other walleye ice fishing tips and techniques. Dustin explained to us how to use a Vexlar flasher and he helped Jason dial in his new Marcum fish finder. If you are new to ice fishing and looking for things to spend your money on make a fish finder or flasher your number one priority. A cheap fishing rod and a cheap fishing reel will get the job done but the advantage of having a flasher or sonar system like the Vexlar or the Marcum it’s hard to deny especially once you see it in action. I am no slouch when it comes to fishing but Dustin is a very fishy dude for sure.
