Today in 1912 Arizona became the 48th state in the union. Another state wouldn't be added until Alaska in 1959.
In 1920 the League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association
Completely by accident, in 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin after leaving a plate of staphylococcus bacteria uncovered, he noticed that a mold that had fallen on the culture had killed many of the bacteria.
And in 1948, NASCAR held its first race for modified stock cars on a 3.2 mile-course at Daytona Beach.
