One thing I've noted about the protests over governmental overreach is the ignorance of the history of rebellions from pre-Confederation times which still remain a foundational part of Canada's national Zeitgeist. Both protestors and the government appear to be suffering from historical amnesia. William Lyon Mackenzie attempted to overthrow the government during the 1837-38 Rebellion but was also a leading politician of his time. While his grandson, William Lyon Mackenzie King, was our Liberal Prime Minister during WWII. It's time to re-examine the history of rebellions in order to study their outcomes because the rebellions and the rebels themselves had lasting affects on how we govern ourselves with the rebels themselves becoming leading citizens and politicians. For their legacy still shapes our ideas of peace, order, and good government today!
