Do you know the risks of obesity for dogs?
Obesity in dogs is a growing problem in the pet population. According to recent research, in Brazil, 25% to 40% of animals are overweight or obese. Commonly adult dogs are the ones who suffer most from the pathology. Therefore, it is important to reinforce that obesity is a risk factor that can stimulate the emergence of heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and joint problems, among others.
Generally, the main causes are inadequate diet and lack of physical activity. For, just as it happens with humans, the weight gain of pets occurs from the imbalance between energy consumption and expenditure. That is, the dog that eats in excess and does not exercise is more likely to accumulate fat in the body, which is very dangerous.
In addition, some breeds need extra attention to feeding, because they have a predisposition that facilitates weight gain, for example, the labrador, rottweiler, basset hound, beagle, pug, shih tzu and boxer. If you are the tutor of one of these breeds, your care needs to be doubled, because in addition to obesity, your dog is also willing to acquire all the other problems that come along with the disease.
However, regardless of the breed of the animal, establishing a routine of physical exercise, offering a balanced diet, and making periodic visits to the veterinarian are fundamental measures to avoid obesity in dogs and the consequences it can cause.
The first warning signs for overweight can be noticed by the guardian. Commonly, the animals lose the definition of the waist and when touching them it is difficult to feel their ribs. In addition, dogs usually show fatigue and less willingness to go for walks and play.
Obese dogs may present respiratory alterations, among the classic signs are short and fast breathing, shortness of breath and respiratory noises
