We guitarists get bogged down in playing the same guitar oriented pentatonic and major scale shapes (see the opening riff of this video). We need to spend practice time on becoming melodic and perhaps thinking about vocal lines to help us create more melodic passages on the guitar. Let go of the patterns you know and challenge yourself to land on the perfect notes! This video gives a couple of basic ideas on how to do that.
