The real age of dogs.
DNA shows that multiplying canine life years by 7 is not an accurate method for comparing the aging of the animal with that of its best friends.
Researchers at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), in the United States, led by biologist Tina Wang, have challenged the widespread idea that, for dogs, one year of life is equivalent to seven years of a human being. According to the belief, adopted even by veterinarians, the age comparison between the species would be as follows: a 1-year-old puppy would be equivalent to a 7-year-old child and a more mature dog, at 7 years old, would be like a 49-year-old person.
An article published in the journal Cell Systems described the analysis of the DNA of 104 animals of the labrador breed, from 0 to 16 years old, to draw a more precise parallel between canine and human aging. The main discovery was that there is, yes, a correlation between the ages of the two species, but that it is not linear as popular wisdom dictates.
By analyzing blood samples from Labradors, the team led by Wang found that dogs age faster in the early years. As time goes by, the aging rhythm slows down: it is as if with 1 year, the dog had 30 human years; with 4 years, its biological age is equivalent to 52 years for a man.
The method used to measure and compare the different stages of development and aging between dogs and humans was to quantify DNA methylation, that is, how methyl groups (a set of three hydrogen atoms and one carbon atom, CH3, with one free electron) become incorporated into the genetic material over time.
The canine chronology goes more or less like this: at 2 years of age, the age is equivalent to 42 years; at 4 years of age, 52; at 7 years of age, which is equivalent to approximately 60 years for a man, aging slows down sharply, so much so that at 9 years of age, the age is equivalent to 65 human years.
