[ARCHIVE 10-24-21] Ep 12: A Look Back at “Star Trek: Discovery” vs. “Picard” (spoilers)

ARCHIVAL NOTE: This video was uploaded to YouTube, October 24, 2021, a full two years after I had intended to drop an episode on this very topic (comparing "Star Trek: Discovery" vs. "Star Trek: Picard"). It had been planned, in October, 2019, to be the second episode of "Who Cares What I Think!?," following Episode 1, a review of "Underworld: Blood Wars." It remained unfinished at the time the Pandemic shattered our lives (or rather our power-hungry government's over-the-top reaction to the pandemic shattered our lives!); this video was sadly postponed indefinitely, so that I could talk about more pressing topics at the time. Two years later, I have revised and updated the material to include references to Discovery, Seasons 3 and 4, Picard's upcoming second season, and the upcoming Discovery spin-off "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." This episode is designated "Part 1" of an ongoing series of videos analyzing the canon-averse, Kurtzman-era of modern Star Trek.

IT’S FINALLY HERE! For over two years, Moonjumper has been promising a deep dive analysis of “Star Trek: Discovery” versus “Star Trek: Picard.” Sadly, this and other “fun” topics got shoved aside for more pressing topics which shattered all sense of normalcy in 2020 and 2021. With “Star Trek: Prodigy” and Discovery, Season 4 only days and weeks away, respectively, now seems like a perfect time to revisit that promise. In this half-hour program, Moonjumper plunges deep into the ins and outs of the “Disco-verse,” comparing and contrasting the radically transformed 23rd century of Discovery’s first two seasons with that of Picard’s more recognizable, albeit darker, late 24th century.

This episode could be considered a “bookend format” from the perspective of what we know now, as we enter Discovery’s fourth season and Picard’s second season, compared to what we could only speculate back in late 2019, when Moonjumper first began editing this project. At that time, Discovery’s second season had just ended; Season 3 was about to take the crew into the distant future, and the first season of Picard had not even aired. However, a NYCC trailer for Picard surprised fans with an authentic TOS-style Romulan Bird-of-Prey, a classic 1960s design esthetic which production teams on Discovery vehemently rejected when Discovery premiered, even sarcastically—and publicly—dismissing such iconic visions of the future as “cardboard sets” unworthy of “modern audiences.” Having spent many hours compiling his initial reactions, Moonjumper presents a portion of his original unreleased video from two years ago, as is, bookended by some of his current thoughts regarding Discovery’s recent third season and upcoming fourth, Picard’s completed first season and upcoming second, and the upcoming “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”
