The Sunshine Coast is an urban area in southeastern Queensland, north of the Brisbane government centre, on a coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Although the area does not have a central business district, by population it is ranked the 10th largest metropolis in Australia and the 3rd largest in Queensland.

Particularly after World War II, the Sunshine Coast developed into a surf destination and holiday destination in general. This trend intensified further during the development boom of the 1960s and 1970s.[6] During the same period, various theme parks and tourist parks were built – the most iconic being the 'Big Pineapple' Woombye. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Sunshine Coast also succeeded in leading people to alternative lifestyles. These immigrants developed handicraft industries, cooperatives, and spiritual centers, especially in the interior.

After the 1980s, the Sunshine Coast experienced rapid population growth. Today the Sunshine Coast is the fastest growing urban area in Australia. As the population of the area grew, most of the small fields – especially tropical fruit fields – were changing function. Instead, businesses related to retail, catering and tourism are becoming increasingly important.
