I have tested and installed quite a few under counter lighting sets but these usually consist of a sticky-backed strip of LEDs with a simple mains transformer and these kits can usually be found for less than £20. As part of our Great Kitchen Makeover, I decided to install a decent quality lighting kit that will be good for the next few years. This comprehensive £54.99 set from LAMPAOUS seemed to tick all the boxes.

The kit consists of six 30 x 3 x 0.8 cm light panels with sticky-backed and metal clip mounts for each, five 20cm extension cables, Y splitter cable, power cord extension cable, UK power supply, in-line control box, screws, cable clips and mounts, and a detailed but poorly printed install guide. All you are going to want and more is included. Build quality seems fine and this does not look or feel like a low-end product.

Hardware installation is simple enough. I opted to use the clip mounts as I have found that sticky-backed mounts will fall off over time and I wanted a good permanent install. It can be a bit tricky fixing the clips to the underside of the wall cabinet as the screws are rather small and fiddly and working on your back is never easy. I resisted the temptation to use the sticky mounts and it all went easily enough. The cable from the power supply connects either to the power extension cable or to the control box and the control box to the Y splitter or directly to the first light in the chain. The light panels have a short length of cable sticking out from each side with a 5 pin male plug on one and a female on the other. The panels can be plugged into each other or extended using the supplied cables. The included Y splitter allows the lights to be mounted in two strips with the power supply in the centre. It is possible to add additional light panels but be sure to obtain the correct type as 4 and 7 pin lights can also be found. Although it does have a power button for manual control the control box, which sits between the power supply and lights, is used to select the wifi connection mode or reset the unit before installation.

The extensive documentation is concerned with the various methods of registering the lighting set with the Smart Life or Tuya Life apps. I found the instructions sheets to be rather confusing and all you need is to follow the instructions within the app. I found the Hot Spot method to work best for me using the AP button on the control box to set up a wifi hotspot from the lighting kit to which I connected my phone and then inputted my wifi details. It was then automatically recognised by Amazon Alexa after installing the Smart Life skill. I have had no connection issues and it has worked every time when controlled by Alexa.

The lights are good and bright and using the Smart Life app or Alexa can be dimmed and the colour temperature seamlessly changed from warm white to cool white. Note that this is not a coloured light set (although LAMPAOUS do make one for about £20. more) and is white light only.

This is an excellent kit, well made and comprehensive and let down only by an overly complicated installation guide. It is a good deal dearer than the low-end budget rivals but if you need a well made set that will last the course it is worth paying out for it.
