WHAT KILLED DC UNIVERSE? [PART 1 of 3]

ARCHIVAL NOTE: I began this episode as the first installment of a three-part series, analyzing the failure of WarnerMedia's short-lived "DC Universe" streaming service. But while compiling my research, I also watched "Wonder Woman 1984" at our local theater. The self-defeating issues with that film, also from Warner Bros., perfectly illustrated some of the same issues which infected Warner's "DC Universe," contributing to the streamer's demise. Thus, Warner Bros.' films like WW84 and "Birds of Prey," along with the general programming of DC Universe, all became part of an overall discussion regarding DC Comics and WarnerMedia as a whole. It all points to what killed DC Universe.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
The DC Universe streaming service is no more - and in its place is HBO Max at twice the price. But in the high likelihood that your local theater is out of business, HBO Max may be the only means you have of watching "Wonder Woman 1984" -- well, if you're interested in a $200 million partisan rant from DC/Warner Brothers (because, clearly, you didn't get enough of that in 2020). Sadly, our nation is being torn apart by such bitter partisanship, it seems even our oldest, most iconic superheroes are picking sides--and alienating audiences. However, the self-defeating tribalism infecting our American entertainment isn't strictly political, but even comes down to perplexing quirks such as age demographic (for example, a now defunct all-superhero streaming service, DC Universe, hellbent on excluding kids and families with its slate of TV-MA original series, as excellent as some of those series may have been). In this video, Moonjumper begins his analytical examination of the current state of DC, Warner Media, and what may have contributed to the failure of DC Universe.
