"Star Trek: Lower Decks" just completed its first season, while "Star Trek: Discovery" has launched its third on CBS All Access. Modern Star Trek (sometimes referred to as "NuTrek"--and not generally as a compliment) has been controversial to say the least. Lower Decks is the franchise's first series sitcom, although actually its second animated series. Star Trek's first animated series (Filmation's "Star Trek: The Animated Series") debuted on NBC, nearly fifty years ago, in 1973. Despite its Saturday morning timeslot, "TAS" was appreciated by millions of adult fans, who valued it for its "serious" dramatic and true science fiction themes. In these two clips from Moonjumper's multi-part analysis of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," Moonjumper compares the classic TAS to today's mature-targeted "Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Picard," in relation to high concept exploratory science fiction. Could the comedic "Lower Decks" be a return to classic form?
