Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Canada, NDG is second only to the Mount Royal park in terms of size. The first land acquisitions for the site took place in 1852, at a time when livestock was still allowed to graze on the church's property. The massive cemetery would eventually become an integral part of the city's life, being both a popular tourist site and a well-known landmark. With an area of more than 200 hectares, it contains over 3 million graves and 15 kilometres of lanes and roads.

NDG Cemetery filled with an incredible amount of gruesome sculptures and unusual monuments. The French name of the place, Cimetière Notre-Dame-des-Neiges (or "Our Lady of Snow") aptly describes the appearance of this necropolis during the winter when it is covered with snow. Some people say that the name also has a more sinister meaning: superstitious locals think that this cemetery is haunted because it was built on a sacred Iroquois Indian burial ground.
