Girl Interrupted: Adding FICTION to a True Story

The movie Girl, Interrupted was based on the memoir by Susanna Kaysen, but the movie made some updates that were absolutely not based on true events. Where is the line between adapting a memoir to the screen and straight-up adding fiction to the truth?
