Updating Kitchen Counter Tops on a BUDGET? | Laminate is EASIER than you THINK! | 2022/002

I was recently asked to help a couple update their kitchen counters. The existing countertops were a bright goldenrod yellow from the late 70s or 8os, and did not go with the new stainless steel appliances and the recently painted cabinets. We choose a Calcutta Marble laminate from WilsonArt and purchased from Home Depot.

The kit included a 5' x 10' piece of laminate and 12' of bull-nosed edge trim. After a few hours of modify and repairing the cabinets boxes, the rubber cement was added to the top, and the back of the new laminate pieces that had been cut to rough size. The rubber cement reactivated the cement that was on the existing cabinets, but two coats had to be put on all new wood, and on the backs of the laminate to insure good coverage and adhesion.

The process was repeated on the backsplash, which was 3/4" x 5" MDF boards. Those were secured to the wall with PowerGrab adhesive, then caulked with a DAP paintable against the wall, and a DAP white silicone where the backsplash met the countertop. The sink was reinstalled with a new faucet, then the bill-nosed counter edges were installed using the same technique of coasting both surfaces with rubber cement, letting it cure, then pressing the surfaces together. A little work with a file to smooth out sharp edges, and a wipe down with mineral spirits to clean off any glue residue.

The appliances were reinstalled, and the project was done.
