John Cho recently came out in an interview with Vulture and was asked if he had seen the original anime before being cast in Netflix's Live Action Adaptation. He had said no. Personally, this doesn't surprise me. It reminds me of when Michael Fassbender admitted that he never played an Assassin's Creed Game before being cast for the movie. Will this answer just add more fuel to the fire of fan outrage over the show? I can't tell you
