The yak is a large animal, native to the Himalayan region of central Asia. The word "yak" comes from Tibetan and means "animal." Yaks are ungulates, meaning they have an even number of toes on each foot with hooves.

Yaks are found in two broad types:  those from Tibet and those from the drier areas of the Himalayas.
