Changes in our Acts are being done whether we like them or not.... We need to understand how amendments to Acts will affect surveillance in Australia.

Yes, we need to stop illegal activities where we see predators continually using online platforms to prey on the innocent, be used to promote pedophilia, human exploitation and cyber bullying etc. Will such amendments also affect our freedom of speech? Only time will tell.

Australian Federal Parliament have given the green light on new Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identity and Disrupt) Bill 2021 which was given the Assent on 3rd September 2021.

In brief, according to Australian Parliament website, this Amendment Bill will see the following Acts amended: Surveillance Devices Act 2004 (Cth)- creating 2 new warrants that may be issues by Australian Dederal Police (AFP) & Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission ( ACIC) (1) Data Disruption Warrants; and (2) Network Activity Warrants Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) - to provide framework for the new takeover warrant which maybe issued by AFP & ACIC. Bill makes consequential amendments to 10 other Acts Including the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986 (Cth).
