Our new relationship with the Earth: An interview with Satish Kumar

Peace-pilgrim, life-long activist and former monk, Satish Kumar has been inspiring global change for over 50 years. Aged 9, Satish renounced the world and joined the wandering Jain monks. Inspired by Gandhi, he decided at 18 that he undertook a peace-pilgrimage, walking without money from India to America in the name of nuclear disarmament. Now in his 80s, Satish has devoted his life to campaigning for ecological regeneration, social justice and spiritual fulfilment. He is co-founded Schumacher College as well as founding The Resurgence Trust, an educational charity that seeks a just future for all. Satish appears regularly on podcasts, radio and television shows. Interviewed by Richard Dawkins, Russell Brand and many more, Satish presented an episode of BBC2’s Natural World documentary series, which was watched by 3.6 million people. An acclaimed international speaker and author, Satish’s autobiography sold over 50,000 copies, inspiring change around the world. His work can be viewed at The Resurgence Trust.

The educational system we have today was designed in the 19th and the 20th century to meet the needs of industry and the market. Young people were told to go out and conquer nature. As a result highly educated people are engaged in activities which destroy biodiversity, creat pollution and waste and cause climate catastrophe.

We need a new kind of education which is nature centred and respects the integrity of the natural world. Satish Kumar, the Founder of Schumacher College will expand and explore the theme of education fit for the 21st century.
