First Freedoms Foundation – Advocating for Truth, Justice and Democracy

Dr. Barry Bussey, PhD, lawyer and author of books, monographs, and numerous law review articles principally on the topic of Religious Liberty and Constitutional Law, looks at the principles of free speech, freedom of religion, and inviolability of the person.
We have heard a lot about “freedom” in Canada lately, and Barry gives us a picture of what the Bible actually says about respectful debate and where we find these first freedoms in the Bible.
The great Protestant reformer, Martin Luther, highlighted how “Liberty is the very essence of faith” (The Great Controversy, pg. 189). Therefore, it is critical for us to discuss how when governments, no matter their intention, step on our fundamental rights, such as freedom of conscience, they step on the very essence of who we are. To stay silent in the face of such challenges is to deny our identity and our very being. In fact, the Pen of Inspiration warns us of our obligation not to remain silent: “We are not doing the will of God if we sit in quietude, doing nothing to preserve liberty of conscience.” - Last Day Events, pg. 127.
