An original country-style song by Mary Rounsavall (Mary Catherine Rounsavall Ott)

One evening in early 2015, I sat down to write a song that I’d thought of. When I did, I redirected my thoughts to write a joke – a “whiskey song” using Pachelbel's Canon in D chords. This song was the product.

I recorded it in February 2015, and – even though I have a degree in vocal performance - I really was struggling that night with my voice.

Later that month, the doctors found a 19cm mass in my abdomen. I was diagnosed with Ovarian and Uterine cancers. I underwent a complete hysterectomy and mass removal. Subsequently, I endured 6 rounds of chemo therapy. I lost all of my hair.

That summer, I buried my dear grandmother. That fall, my other grandmother died.

Then, my husband of 13 years passed away on Thanksgiving morning.

So while my vocal isn’t the best and I know that I could record the work, I left it as is – to represent the beginning of the hardest year of my life.

Special thanks to Stacy Bearden for the use of his art, studio, and jazz piano skills.
